I found some old and worn slides from art school and have had them put into digital form. The original photo's aren't the best but they give an idea of what my first landscapes were like.  'Mowhanau', 1998.
Mowhanau Beach is a fifteen minute drive north of Wanganui where two small rivers flow into the sea beside small cliffs. It was a place that featured often in my work during my last year of art school. This image is from an old slide.  'Decanter Bay, Banks Peninsula', 2010.
I have a book in which I record the details of every piece I have done since my last year of art school and this is the 400th oil piece.  'Kaitoke Road Stop, Wanganui'. 1999.
An example of the looser style of painting from the Wanganui years, pieces like this would take me half an hour as opposed to the eight to ten they do now.  'Virginia Lake, Wanganui', 2001.
During the five years I spent in Wanganui, I took many trips up to Virginia Lake to draw and sketch, not the pretty birds and lake, but the dark sinster corners leading off into the trees. I enjoyed giving the shadows some colour and this led to a series based on obscure little streams in the bush around Wellington.  'From Matapaua Bay, Coromandel', 2003.
This was the first piece that I painted when I moved to the UK in 2003, in a tiny little dark room in Kensal Green. It was a drawing I had of a trip to the Coromandel just before leaving and the beautiful little bay (with its crazy steep access road) seemed a world away from the glum, dark London clouds and skyline. I found this image of an example of my older work. The Coromandel has lots of lovely little hidden beaches like this and I've spent many trips up there exploring and drawing. This piece featured in my solo show at Idiom studio in 2002.
