I found this in an old book of stories today. Fuelled by repeated viewings of 'Top Gun', I would write and illustrate my own war stories to entertain my eleven year old self.

 "Waitakere View', 1998.
I found some old and worn slides from art school and have had them put into digital form. The original photo's aren't the best but they give an idea of what my first landscapes were like.  'Mowhanau', 1998.
Mowhanau Beach is a fifteen minute drive north of Wanganui where two small rivers flow into the sea beside small cliffs. It was a place that featured often in my work during my last year of art school. This image is from an old slide.  'Gemstone Bay, Coromandel', 2001.
I found this image of an example of my older work. The Coromandel has lots of lovely little hidden beaches like this and I've spent many trips up there exploring and drawing. This piece featured in my solo show at Idiom studio in 2002.
 'Wanganui River', 1998
This is one of the few pieces I have left from my last year of art school. This piece was originally much wider but when making the frame (from good old recycled river wood) I made a mistake so cut the piece to fit the frame. The view is from the path up Durie Hill where I used to live. I would walk past this spot and down the path to the river on my way to school whenever my car was out of action. I might put up a few more older pieces in the next few posts. |
